Andrew is one of the most interesting and complex characters I’ve ever come across. He completely subverts the hero archetype. He cares deeply for his family and those immediately close to him. He’s willing to do and has done anything to protect the people he cares about. He’s an abuse survivor trying very hard to move forward and take control of his live. But at the same time he can be cold and calculating and he’s not at all soft or nice. A lot of the things he’s done could qualify as irredeemable. Yet the reader comes to understand him deeply without being pushed to ignore his past behavior because while he does change in letting Neil in, he essentially doesn’t change. Our perception of him does.
